Freshers' Chaplaincy Fayre

Wednesday 19th of September from 12pm to 2pm at the University Chaplaincy, Potterrow.

This is an opportunity for the Bahai, Christian, Jewish, Muslim and Humanist groups to meet together with each other and the Multi-faith Chaplaincy team. Humanism is about humans enjoying and coping and making the most out of life. Many people use religion to fulfil these same needs. This event is an opportunity for us to learn about how they do that as well as an opportunity for them to learn about humanism. Many people are unaware of what Humanism is and the Chaplaincy Fayre is another opportunity for us to clear misconceptions and advance dialogue.

Mark the date on your calendar and come and meet us in our stall!

Press Release  6th July 2007

Humanist Society launches at the University of Edinburgh

The University of Edinburgh (UoE) has a new student group, the Humanist Society.
The Humanist Society aims to establish a positive social environment for UoE students who are rationalists, non-theists (agnostics or atheists), humanists, or sceptics; to enrich UoE campus life by sponsoring educational events and fostering student dialogue on matters of faith, science, and reason; as well as to engage students in issues of national and international import surrounding freedom of conscience and secular education.

Humanism is a non-religious philosophy based on reason and compassion. It provides the basis for a fulfilling and ethical life (without any supernatural belief).

The Edinburgh University Humanist Society (HS) invites students to meet, discuss and act in an environment that is freethinking, progressive and based on Humanist values. The Humanist Society is an inclusive gathering of inquisitive minds, with affirmative and constructive goals.

Humanist Society President Roger Redondo says “It’s about time that a student society caters specifically to students who guide their lives through reason and scientific understanding. Even though bringing free-thinkers together can be like herding cats sometimes, we hope to build a community of young humanists and have fun in the process.”

HS member Tim Mills says “To me, humanism is about basing my life on what I can know - human values, observable reality, this life right now. That seems much more fulfilling and worthwhile than banking on things I can't know, like invisible gods or life after death. Now we have a group of students who share this uplifting and honest approach to life. Awesome!”

The Humanist Society is included in the category “Faith and Belief Systems” together with nine student faith groups. While advancing inter-faith and no-faith understanding, the Humanist Society also aims to be a beacon of rationalism among the faith groups while providing a non-supernatural basis to a moral life.

Pride Scotia

The Edinburgh University Humanist Society was proud to be a sponsor of Pride Scotia. As humanists, we celebrate diversity and support the right to form consensual relationships and to express love and gender free from oppression, dogma and discrimination. We hope you enjoyed the festival and feel free to come to UoE Humanist Society events in future!
